Choose simple and classic outfits

There’s no reason to over dress your kiddo for school pictures. Simple is always going to be the most timeless option. For boys a nice button up shirt with a collar, for girls maybe a cute dress or sweater. Simple and classic is best and be sure to honor who your child is. You want to remember who they were at this stage in their school journey. Keep in mind the family members like grandparent who will want to share the photos as well.

Select natural and non-neon colors

In addition to classic outfits, the color choice matters. Natural don’ts necessarily mean neutral. Select clothing items in colors that would be found in nature, this tends to be a little less vibrant. You’ll want to avoid neon or overly bright colors, because they can create something called color casting- meaning it will reflect colors onto your child’s face in an unflattering way. Natural tones don’t tend to creating reflecting colors. Choose colors like rose red, navy blue, charcoal gray, forest green.

Avoid logos and graphics

You want your child to be the focus of their photos, not the shirt they are wearing. Logos and graphics can be downright distracting in school pictures, so I recommend avoiding them when possible. Let your sweet kiddos personality shine in their school pictures.

Don’t worry about shoes

School photos are typically taken from the shoulder up so don’t worry too much about the shoes your kiddo wears to school. In the preschool years, the importance of your child being able to put on their shoes on their own is big for your teachers, so don’t get too caught up on wardrobe items that won’t be in the pictures.

Simple Hairstyles and fresh haircuts

Keeping your kiddos hair as simple as possible is best for picture day. While fun braids and pigtails are adorable, they can be difficult for your child or the school to maintain until picture time. Keep your kiddos hair simple for picture day so that school may run a comb through it if possible to make sure your kid looks fresh in pictures. For kids with short hair, a fresh hair cut or some hair gel can be a great way to keep unruly locks in their place. Be sure to let your kiddo be themselves. Let curly hair be curly, straight hair be straight and avoid covering up with hats. Keep the look classic.
