WHAT TO WEAR FOR FAMILY PHOTOS | TIPS FROM A SPOKANE FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER
Dress mom first
My first tip is always to dress mom first. Mom’s outfit will set the tone for all of the other outfits as far as color and casualness. Mom deserves to feel beautiful and the best way to accomplish that is to let her choose her outfit first rather than trying to fit her outfit to what the rest of the family is wearing. I recommend dresses for most moms having outdoor family photos taken. This is because dresses are flattering on every figure and add beautiful, feminine movement to the photos.
Be comfortable
Everyone in your family should be dressed comfortably. There’s no reason to overdress for your family photos. Avoid clothing that is too tight, too loose or that isn’t a typical style that your family would wear. Comfort is everything when it comes to family photos.
Colors that compliment nature
Colors are probably the single most important choice to make when selecting your outfits for family photos. The best colors are colors that compliment nature or that are more muted and neutral. Bright, vibrant colors tend to clash with many colors in nature. We want your outfits to fit comfortably into the scenery so that your family is the main focus of the photos, not what they’re wearing.
Avoid graphics and athletic shoes
Graphics and athletic shoes stand out in photos and can be a bit distracting. Choose outfits that do not have graphics or logos. For shoes, opt for a slightly dressier option- think business casual. If you’re looking for shoes for your young baby, barefoot can be a great option if they’re going to be held for most of the photoshoot.
