Should I get my make up done for family photos? | Spokane Family PHotographer
As a family photographer here is what I recommend to all of my clients in regards to make up for their family photos.
Keep it natural.
My biggest tip is to keep your make up very natural-looking. I want you to look and feel like you in your photos and the best way to do this is to keep your look as close to your daily look as possible. I don’t usually recommend hiring a make up artist for family photos for this reason, unless you are really nervous about doing your own make up or if it’s a regular thing that you do.
If you are not someone who typically wears make up, I do recommend wearing some for your family photos, but it’s okay to keep it minimal. I have more tips below.
Wear foundation for even skin tone.
A little foundation in the perfect color can go a long way. I recommend wearing foundation to even out your skin tone and cover up any blemishes. There’s no need to go overboard, just a little will do.
Mascara and eyeliner to play up the eyes.
Mascara and eyeliner are great for playing up the eyes a bit. Opt for a natural color like black or brown to add a little extra pigment to the lash line and help the eyes stand out in your photos.
Blush for a little bit of color.
Sometimes using foundation can mute the natural pink hue from our cheeks just a little too much, adding just a little bit of blush can help put some color back to your skin tone. Blush can add an attractive glow to the face, so this is definitely something I recommend, just use it sparingly.
Avoid too much bronzer.
I recommend being very careful with too much bronzer or highlighter, really anything high in shimmer. Cameras are very sensitive to light cast from shimmery make up, which may make the look of it much too intense. I recommend skipping bronzer and highlighter for your family photos if possible, because it can be very tricky to edit back out. This includes spray tans too.
Avoid unnatural colors.
Keep your colors as natural as possible with all of your makeup for your family photos. Avoid things like blue mascara or dark red lipsticks. While they look great in person, they often don’t photograph well so it’s better to be safe than sorry and leave those for non-picture days.
Chapstick for the entire family.
My last tip is to put chapstick on your entire family. Lips get dry when we’re out taking photos, so some chapstick can help keep the lips looking smooth and hydrated. Chapped lips can be very difficult to edit in a way that looks natural, so chapstick for everyone is a best practice.
