Should I get my hair done for my family photos? | Spokane Family Photographer
So you’ve invested in your family photos and ordered the perfect outfits to go with, and now you may be asking, “should I get my hair done for my family photos?” As a family photographer, my answer is, “it depends!” Let’s go into what I recommend for hair for all of my clients.
Keep it natural.
There’s no reason to go out and hire a stylist for a whole hairdo for your family picture day. I recommend skipping any up-dos and wearing your hair down, styled by yourself in a way that you would normally style it. I want you to look and feel like you in your pictures, so the best way to do that is to style your own hair. There’s no need to get overly fancy for family photos.
Schedule cuts/colors for you and family if your due for them.
If your husband and kids are due for some haircuts, then 1-2 weeks before your family picture day would be a great time to get those done with plenty of time to get them fixed if they’re not quite right. No one wants to preserve a bad hair day if they can help it. If you regularly get your hair cut and colored, follow those guidelines as well. I recommend not getting to0 creative with this haircut and keep it as close to your usual style as possible. Random big “chops” or changes can be fun, but save it for after your family picture day, just to be on the safe side.
If at all possible, avoid any artificial looking hair colors like pink, blue, green. They often don’t photograph nicely, so it’s fun to have a pop of color at times, but save that for after your family pictures.
Here are some extra tips for great hair on photo day
Here are a few additional tips for products to use for your best possible hair for your family pictures. I recommend purchasing these products in a salon quality version, plenty of great options can be found at most beauty stores.
For smooth, low-frizz hair, especially if there’s wet weather in the forecast, try a smoothing serum.
I always recommend following the instructions on the bottle, but most smoothing serums are applied to the hair when damp after washing then blowdried for frizz-free locks and a sleek finish. These smoothing serums are often also heat protectants which is great if you’re using hot styling tools.
Finishing Spray.
A great finishing spray can help control the little flyaways at your part. This is great if there’s a little bit of wind in the forecast.
Texturizing spray.
A texturizing spray can help add some volume to your hair and make it have the appearance of being professionally styled. This is another favorite of mine
