What if it rains on my family photo day? | Spokane Family Photographer

One of the biggest questions families have when planning their family photos in the spring time in Spokane is, “what if it rains on my family photo day?” With our unpredictable Spokane-spring weather, I can’t blame anyone for having this concern. One day it’s 75 degrees and sunny, the next day we get an unexpected shower of snow, anything’s possible in the Inland Northwest. For any mom who’s planning her pictures and worried, here’s what I say.

  1. WAIT OUT THE WEATHER and dress for the occasion.

Option 1 is always wait out the weather and dress for the rain. As fast as the rain rolls in, sometimes it also rolls out. If your family can be flexible and the weather app predicts some kind of break in the weather, we can just wait and see what happens. I’d never make a family stand in the pouring rain for photos and it’s not good for my gear either, but if there’s a chance it will clear and we’ll have a cool stormy sky with pops of sun, it might be worth waiting it out. Some of the coolest family photos I’ve taken were just after the rain cleared. One other benefit to fresh rainfall is more light reflection in the scenery which can really make your photos sparkle. Sometimes it’s worth it to wait out the rain. I do this on a very case by case basis.

If your family is set on perfect golden hour sunshine photos, then we will reschedule, but if you’re willing to take a small risk, then it can be worthwhile to wait out the weather.

Keep in mind, if we wait it out and things are a bit soggy, you’ll want to make some wardrobe adjustments so that your family is comfortable during the photos.

  2. move the photos indoors.

Option 2 is that we can move your photos indoors, often into your home. Nothing beats cozy in-home family photos on a stormy day. If your family is open to having photos done indoors instead or if the rain just isn’t going to let up, this can be a great option.

  3. reschedule THE PHOTOSHOOT.

Option 3 is that we can reschedule. We can’t control the weather so if you’re set on those sunny outdoor photos, then sometimes the only option is to reschedule. Sometimes this means moving the session earlier or later in the day, other times it may mean another day entirely. I’ll always work with my families to ensure I get their photos done as close to the set plan as possible.

While rain can be a little inconvenient, there’s always options when it comes to family photo day. I always keep tabs on the weather and try to discuss issues like weather as early as possible with my clients. Whether we ride it out or reschedule, I will do everything in my power to deliver those gorgeous family photos to you year after year.
